Eels

One of the most important species to live in the Brue are eels, well known for their amazing and heroic life cycle that begins in the Sargasso Sea, travels across the Atlantic, makes the transition from salt water to fresh (at Highbridge in our case), comes up the Brue (if it is able), leaves the water and wriggles across the damp grass.

Eel numbers now stand at about 3% of their numbers in the last century. It is vital that they are protected and enabled to recover.

Here is where you can find out more about the Somerset Eel Recovery Project.
